About Me

I grew up in McFarland, Wisconsin, near Madison.  Always an artsy kid, I knew I wanted to play percussion when I saw my sister perform with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra.  The percussionists always seemed to be having the most fun and I was completely enthralled by the physical nature of the instrument.  The powerful sound sound and versatility of the marimba captivated me, and it's still my favorite percussion instrument to this day.

After high school, I studied percussion at the University of Michigan, performing with the Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Band, and Symphony Orchestra.  I found that the most rewarding experiences came when I was in collaboration with composers, leading me to think a lot about the importance of creating new musical experiences for audiences.  After college, I worked briefly at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and the Kennedy Center.  Now I live in Brooklyn, NY and work for Carnegie Hall, supporting the important work of the Weill Music Institute.

Thanks Sam! I checked it out, and I had a question: in an audition, should you observe the dynamics as written (soft during a solo) or as you would play in an orchestra (definitely at least a little louder)?

Hi! This is my 3rd year in the SWFL Symphony Youth Orchestra program. They have a new orchestra this year that I am in. Altogether there are 3 ensembles in their program. Our next concert is on Dec. 9!

Hi Sam! I have a lot of percussionist friends, they are quite wonderful people. I enjoy being able to share at least one instrument with them.

Thank you for letting me know! I was just going to look to see what might be going on at Carnegie. I will surely look around. :)
