Profile Information

I am a:
Student
My school is:
Buford Middle School
My other school or arts organization is:
Music Resource Center
My style(s) of music:
Electronic, Experimental, Folk, Indie, Traditional, World
I am interested in:
Composing / Arranging, Conducting, Music Theory, Performing, Recording / Producing / Engineering, Songwriting / Writing Lyrics
My musical instrument(s):
Cello, Guitar, Piano / keyboard, Percussion, Voice
My other musical interests, styles, and instruments are:
Um, I like to pick out songs on my cello when I hear them and then arrange them with multitracks on GarageBand. I also, when playing guitar, refrain from using picks, instead just doing weird finger patterns, finger pickings.
CURRENTLY TRYING MY BEST TO LEARN SPANISH FLY--Believe in me and i WILL learn it. (haha this will take a while...)
My favorite artists, influences, and inspirations are:
I love Fleetwood Mac, Iron & Wine, and Eddie Vedder. I think Eddie Vedder is a big inspiration for me because he has a very expressive style of playing, almost never playing something the same way twice! I also love the soundtrack for the movie Once, because I think in some songs the guy--who is just playing a normal acoustic guitar--lets everything go and shreds his vocal chords with soul while just playing on the side of the street begging for coins.
And just since some people like lists, I guess I can just name some artists that I love and inspire me:

Birdy (Cover artist at the moment)
Eddie Vedder
Turtle Islant String Quartet (So cool--Check out Skylife)
Feist
Jem
Portishead (A very overlooked wonder)
CAT POWER (Her earlier stuff is a bit better, I think)
Massive Attack (Very interesting concept...)
Iron & Wine
LAURIE ANDERSON (so wierd...yet so awesome...)
Imogen Heap
Passion Pit (Enter Indies...)
Imagine Dragons
American Authors
Caro Emerald
Glen Hansard
Nirvana
PINK FLOYD
Walk off the Earth
Mutemath
REGINA SPEKTOR
Phoenix
Ellie Goulding
Delta Rae
Jami Sieber
Sonny and Cher
Fiona Apple
Van Halen
Pearl Jam
RADIOHEAD
Muse
Camera Obscura
The Naked and Famous
Norah Jones
Frightened Rabbit
Lamb
KRUDER AND DORFMEISTER (absoLUTELY love)
LORDE (I love her too)
Alt-J
Ratatat
Bon Iver
Tripswitch
Bassnectar
Cake
Coldplay
Sublime
JIM JAMES
Deptford Goth
JAMES BLAKE (so much amazingness)
More about me:
I am an 8th grader who lives in Charlottesville and plays cello in BMSO (Buford Middle School Orchestra...you could've guessed it).

I also love to write and ride horses and TAKE PHOTOS. I guess I don't exactly fit in perfectly with everyone, but you know us musicians...

Hi Carmen!

Deidre here, songwriting teaching artist from Carnegie. Congrats on becoming a finalist!

First I want to say I was blown away by your original song. You've really come up with some cool accompaniment ideas on the cello (an instrument I've always wanted to play! I'm a pianist) and I dig the authenticity in your voice. What I heard makes me want to hear more!

Please reach out whenever you like with any comments, questions, etc. You can hear my music by checking out my profile. I'll be adding new content throughout the season.

I hope you'll do the songwriting prompts for the next couple of months. This first one is: Who are you as a songwriter?

Happy writing!

Deidre
