Recap: Musical Exchange's Songwriter Search

Songwriter Search

This project began with a nationwide call for songwriters in the Spring 2013. Musical Exchange members between the ages of 13 and 17 were asked to submit a video of them performing an original song, as well as a personal statement about their most memorable musical moment or their greatest musical inspiration. Six talented songwriters from around the United States were selected for the opportunity to travel to South Africa.

Songwriter Online Project

Songwriters, composers, singers and instrumentalists throughout the Musical Exchange community were invited to join the Songwriter Online Project. Six creative activities, led by Musical Exchange artists Aram Bajakian and Deidre Struck, were posted for participant responses.

Activity #1: Who are you as a songwriter?

Activity #2:What makes a great chord progression?

Activity #3: What makes a great melody?

Activity #4: What goes into great vocal harmonies?

Activity #5: Where can chords take your melody?

Activity #6: What song ideas surprise you?

The songwriters reflected on their experience in South Africa in this Carnegie Hall blog post.
