NYO-U: Mini-Masterclasses by NYO-USA

NYO-U is a collection of original mini-masterclasses on various music techniques and topics that are written and produced by NYO-USA musicians.

Meet the 2017 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America and NYO2

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Following a comprehensive audition process and a three-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world to serve as dynamic music ambassadors. In 2017, the orchestra will travel to Latin America with conductor Marin Alsop and perform a program that includes a new Carnegie Hall–commissioned work by Gabriela Lena Frank and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. The tour kicks off with the orchestra’s annual concert at Carnegie Hall, continuing with stops in Mexico City, Mexico; Quito, Ecuador; and Bogotá, Colombia. In 2018, NYO-USA will return to Asia for a tour with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

In 2017, outstanding young American instrumentalists ages 14–17 come together to form NYO2, a summer orchestral training program with a particular focus on attracting talented students from groups underserved by and underrepresented in the classical orchestral field. Running in conjunction with NYO-USA’s annual summer residency at Purchase College, SUNY, NYO2 offers an opportunity for participants to play alongside exceptionally talented peers and learn from a world-class faculty. NYO2 aims to expand the pool of young musicians across the country equipped with the tools to succeed at the highest level, particularly those who will bring greater diversity to classical orchestral music and/or those who have not had access to highly selective training opportunities through major youth orchestra programs, summer festivals and camps, or similar experiences outside of their local community. NYO2 is free for all participants, including room and board, and all rehearsal, teaching, and performance activities.

As a central part of NYO2, participants have the opportunity to work closely with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, an organization with its own deep commitment to education and artist training. In July 2017, NYO2 will perform side by side with select members of The Philadelphia Orchestra in concerts in Philadelphia and at Carnegie Hall led by Giancarlo Guerrero.

@Federico:  That's great that you are practicing now for your NYO-USA audition!  Do you have a favorite recording of Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6?

Hey Guys!

Check out this video from the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra.  This is a group that ONLY performs new music - including rock!

Hey, guys!  Check out this video of my school's orchestra!  The Youth Performing Arts School Philharmonia performing the fourth movement of the St. Paul Suite by Gustav Holst.

I'm going to begin preparing audition excerpts immediately! I already have played the Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 in DYAO last season but it's been awhile so I'll need to clean it up a bit ;)

The National Youth Orchestra looks so cool! Too bad I'm too young now to try out :( Good luck to those that are though.
