Arranging Ellington

Congratulations to Michael Conrad for his winning submission to the Arranging Ellington project! Our review panel was impressed by the depth and inventiveness of all of the submissions, but Michael’s arrangement of “Come Sunday” was particularly remarkable. 

 

Due to the high quality of submissions we received, we have decided that two other arrangements from the project will also be performed at the concert on March 30th at Carnegie Hall. We would like to congratulate Dan O’Brien and Stephanie Wieseler on being selected to have their arrangements performed this spring.

Looking forward to having them!

I wanted to expand on the notion of keeping a sound journal...

if you can record sounds that mean something to you in your every day life that somehow relate to your song or image, I can them help you integrate it into a soundscape for electronics if you wish to have that in your piece. I use LOGIC, but garageband works well should you have that! Anyway, concentrate on finding that song or image you relate to and mapping it onto a timeline and musical tree and we will take it one step at a time! Thanks!

Hello friends! I am so excited to begin. I've been thinking about the first "challenge". Please take a look at this page:

We will be utilizing specific visual tools for composing. Take a close look at the timeline. This is for a piece called BodyMaps. When I began thinking about this piece, which is a collaboration with the Mexican artist, Erika Harrsch, I thought alot about how we would communicate. I decided a linear timeline would be best in terms of when things would occur, and how we would organize our thoughts.

However, I do not just think linearly! Sometimes we want to think vertically, and so I've often used musical trees where I organize material in terms of heirarchy of importance...

So I want you to attempt using a timeline and musical tree for a musical idea you will develop during these weeks with me!

As for ideas to develop....I've thought alot about that, too. One of the things that thrilled me is that we are connecting through all these cultures.

So I've chosen two prompts for what you use as your musical idea:

1. A folk tune from your country that you love

Take a look at the site above. Listen to fimmene, the original folk song I recorded, and then listen to how I intrepreted it.

2. Using a preexisting story can also work. 

I've been in love with Kandinsky's book, Sounds, forever. Take a look at the book, posted on the site above, and see if it inspires you. If not, take a story that you love, and we will work with that as the source for your composition.

Lastly, I love to collaborate. It has driven my artistic life. So, I've created a little film about collaboration that I might help you in this virtual community!

I will post in soon. I can't wait to begin this adventure!
