Comment by Leslie Stifelman on April 17, 2012 at 12:41am @ Kyle Welcome Kyle and thank you so much for taking us into your practice room and posting for all of us. I've just finished watching your videos and I'm very impressed with your sincerity and your vocal accuracy. You are correct - you have been very well taught, bravo. And I think we can help introduce you to a higher level of story telling and character development which will then in turn lead you back to a further exploration of your vocal technique.
I'm going to engage Roger in discussing Bring Him Home with you from an acting perspective and the characterization. There are places that are traditionally sung full voiced - and they are important because of the depth of the story and Jean Valjean's circumstances - I am hoping you know every inch of the story of Les Miserables! It is such a thrilling moment in the show and this song needs not only a great voice, but a great actor to create the visceral excitement for the audience.
If you don't mind me suggesting I'm thinking that I would love to hear you sing something from the Golden Age or a standard like "Hey There" from Pajama Game. Make no mistake these songs are a vocalists Etudes and will help you build the foundation to your technique and your story telling skill.
So glad to meet you and have this opportunity to collaborate with you. Leslie
PS Who are you studying with and where?

Comment by Leslie Stifelman on April 16, 2012 at 11:33pm @ Jonah Good luck at your audition for King and I. The most important thing to remember is to breathe before you sing and to always be yourself. Don't let the quickness of the first few notes trip you up so that you don't take a real breath before you sing. Also the most important word in the sing is (drumroll) YOU. So don't drop the end of that word each time. Try to support until the end of each phrase because that is where the important lyrics and rhymes live. All best Jonah and let us all know how you do. Where is the production?

@Leslie, Thank you for the compliment! I do take voice lessons, but I only just started. I don't know what is considered traditional musical theater, but I have sang songs from Oliver and Peter Pan (the first show I ever saw when I was 4 - with Cathy Rigby!!). I would love to know any suggestions for songs for me!
I am auditioning for a role in "The King & I" next weekend and so I am going to post me singing "Getting to Know You", which I have to sing for the audition. It's a big audition for me, so if you (OR ANYONE ELSE ON HERE) have any suggestions to make my performance better I would love to hear them.
@Damon, OMG I have never seen anything like that before and I would love to see Carmina Burana live one day!!
@Hayley, I watched "If I Loved You" and you inspired me!
@Tony, I listened to "Beyond the Sea" and I love the tone of your voice.
@Ben Ha Ha that you would ever be ANY bit jealous of ME. ;-) I love watching your videos.
It is so helpful for me to watch all these videos I feel like I learn something from each person's performance!!
Comment by Tony Ponella on April 15, 2012 at 1:29pm Wow! It's exciting to see so may posting! It's going to take me all afternoon to catch up!
@Jonathon Thanks so much! I've been told that my "Midwestern" vowels need to go...still working on that :D
@Leslie Yes! There were certainly some interestingdays during the voice change, and I'm not 100% settled yet. I guess I had it alright compared to some of the horror stories I've heard.
Over the last few months, I've actually been exploring some golden age/Great American Songbook rep and love it. One of the songs I've been working on is "On the Street Where You Live" and I'll try to make a video of it when I rehearse with my pianist later this week. Meanwhile, although it's not from a show, here's audio of "Beyond the Sea". I would love any other suggestions for rep!
